This is a classic 25k run in the Atlas Mountains.
Starting with a steep mountain ascent through pine forests, you will reach the highest point of the run within the first hour. Catch your breath and enjoy the splendid views over the Marrakech plains.
From here a meandering ridgeline takes you back into the mountains, and then a short section on a hard topped road. From here a 4×4 track winds down into the Anoughal valley far below.
A short technical section will take you across the river to the first Berber village of Igourdane.
The path then ascends slowly towards a second berber village (Ait Hamd) before a short, steep section taking you down to a third village, Sllamt. Footing here is tricky on the steep scree, and it’s sobering to realise that the village children use this path to get to school everyday!
From Sllamt village, you will follow a splendid balcony path heading back out of the Anougual valley to the shrine of Sidi Hussein. From here it’s just a short run back to Amizmiz.
An alternative finish is to head uphill from Ait Hamd to a small coll, and then wind down along an ancient irrigation channel, through pine forests and past the final village of Tafgarht.
